For example, Marc Jacobs isn't realistic for many, whereas Marc by Marc is more attainable.

Next year the Calvin Klein company expects to generate $6 billion in retail sales, a small fraction of which — about $40 million — will come from sales of the runway collections designed by its star Francisco Costa. A money-loser, the collections’ real value lie in marketing and the skillful use of advertising and celebrities like the hot-bodied Eva Mendes, who was at Mr. Costa’s show on Thursday, and thus its prestige is wildly inflated.

More and more, expensive ready-to-wear functions like haute couture, as the bait that hooks consumers. Fashion houses get news media exposure for their shows — that’s one purpose of Fashion Week — while the bulk of their clothing sales comes from preseason collections, which reflect the designer’s aesthetic as well as enjoy a longer selling time in stores because they are delivered before runway pieces.

Besides, runway looks are typically ordered in such small qualities that relatively few people will ever see or touch the actual garments, much less own them.

The gap, then, is widening between what you see on the runway and what, in effect, you get, although how much this bothers editors is hard to say. They have their own reasons for attending shows.

But one dress from the fall 2008 collections — Balenciaga’s look No. 2, a sculptural black sheath — illustrates the point. Editors raved about the dress’s modern cut. It appeared in major fashion magazines, and stores like Barneys featured it in their ads.

Investigators are reviewing at least 30 unsolved murder cases for possible links to an unidentified serial killer suspected in at least 11 slayings since 1985. The unsolved cases have many similarities to those carried out by the serial killer, including locations where the bodies were dumped, Los Angeles police Detective Dennis Kilcoyne said Friday. He estimated at least six of the 30 cases would be linked to the murderer. "We don't know who he is, but his numbers are building," Kilcoyne said. "Once we are done, I am quite confident this will exceed anything we have ever seen in the city." Kilcoyne's comments came after the Los Angeles Police Department held a news conference to announce for the second time a city-funded reward of up to $500,000 for information. The reward was first announced last week but authorities distributed the wrong phone number for the public to call so responses were limited.

Tina Fey was "likely" to play Gov. Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live," said a person close to NBC's sketch comedy show.
Fey is "likely" to return to her former show Saturday to play the Alaskan governor and Sen. John McCain's running mate, a person close to the show told The Associated Press on Friday night. The person requested anonymity because the decision has not been announced officially. No further details were available.

A 33-year-old woman stole her daughter's identity to attend high school and join the cheerleading squad, according to a criminal complaint filed against the woman. Wendy Brown, of Green Bay, faces a felony identity theft charge after enrolling in Ashwaubenon High School as her 15-year-old daughter, who lives in Nevada with Brown's mother. According to the complaint, Brown wanted to get her high school degree and become a cheerleader because she didn't have a childhood and wanted to regain a part of her life that she'd missed. Brown allegedly attended cheerleading practices before school started, received a cheerleader's locker and went to a pool party at the cheerleading coach's house. The $134.50 check Brown gave to the cheerleading coach for her uniform bounced, the complaint said.

Talk about family values. Wonder what Wendy's daughter is doing right now. Hitting the crack pipe?

18 People Dead Near LA

At least 18 people were killed and 135 injured when a passenger train packed with rush-hour commuters slammed head-on into a freight train Friday in suburban Los Angeles, a spokeswoman for the Metrolink train service said Saturday. A commuter rail car lies on its side after a collision Friday near Los Angeles, California. At least three more people remain trapped inside the train and are presumed dead.

Hurricane Ike's storm surge flooded Galveston's historic district early Saturday, sparked fires and knocked out power. Park benches are strewn about in downtown Houston Saturday during Hurricane Ike. Heavy winds continued to pummel the coastal region more than four hours after the storm made landfall as a Category 2 storm. It has since weakened to a Category 1, the National Hurricane Center said in its 9 a.m. ET update. The storm flooded the historic district with 7 feet of water, which has since subsided to 4 feet, according to a Galveston county official. A foot of water flooded the city's main courthouse, where many people rode out the storm, Margaret Bunch said. The storm cut off power to more than 4 million people in the Houston area after it made landfall at 2:10 a.m. CT on Galveston Island.

I've done some crazy shit in my past.. assault charges, punching haters at shows, slashing tires, breaking windows, etc. but now I have a felony weapons charge =( + the $20,000 bail to get me out of jail, that was real nice.

I find it ironic that Kanye West got arrested at another airport this morning.. but I didn't mean to do what I did. I made a huge mistake and I paid for it..

MySpace Music CEO Search

With the new iteration of MySpace Music poised to launch, the joint venture between News Corp. and three major music companies is still looking for someone to fill the top job.

Andy Schuon, a former head of programming at MTV and Infinity Broadcasting (now CBS Radio) and longtime Universal Music executive, is among two finalists interviewing this week, according to industry sources. The other candidate is Owen Van Natta, the former vice president of operations and chief revenue officer at rival social networking site Facebook.

Schuon's career has been at the intersection of technology and music. His most recent venture is "C" Student Entertainment, a boutique radio and mobile media company co-founded with Former Chief Executive of Premiere Radio networks, Steve Lehman. It struck a deal to bring celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's celebrity and entertainment news to radio audiences.

Schuon was among the early label executives to embrace digital distribution. He did a stint as head of pressplay, an early, if hamstrung, venture started by Universal and Sony Music Entertainment to provide a legitimate source for music on the Internet. That service was acquired in 2003 by Napster.

Van Natta, who was responsible for business development and strategic partnerships at Facebook until he left in April, previously worked at Amazon.com, where he was vice president of worldwide business and corporate development and also was part of the founding team of its A9.com site, a search engine.

MySpace Music's six-month CEO search has reportedly met with its share of frustration. But company insiders contend it hasn't been that big an issue because Chief Executive Chris DeWolfe and Chief Operating Officer Amit Kapur are heavily involved in the launch.

Several other execs with Internet experience have been approached about the gig, including former AOL executive vice president Jim Bankoff, BigChampagne chief executive Eric Garland, and Benchmark Capital entrepreneur Dave Goldberg and Ian Rogers, both formerly general managers of Yahoo Music.

MySpace declined to comment on its search for a head of its music venture.

A lucky cat owes one of its nine lives to a firefighter who revived it with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Al Machado rescued the cat from a burning apartment Tuesday, telling The Standard Times of New Bedford that he saw immediately that it needed air. Machado began performing mouth to mouth on the animal as he carried it outside. Video shot at the scene shows Machado bent over, breathing into the cat's mouth several times. The cat, a tiger angora, was revived and resting comfortably soon after.

waking up in nyc this morning 7 years later and it feels like just yesterday this city and our worlds were turned upside down.... never in my lifetime had I ever believed that I would see such horror- the kind that you see in documentaries set in far off places and read about in text books- never in my life had I ever thought that I would wake up and fall asleep afraid- watching things on television that felt like a film- walking through a city that felt like a war zone. there were army vehicles on houston street, barricades dividing neighbourhoods and lines around the block of people waiting to donate blood set in front of a backdrop of smoke filling a space where two of the largest buildings once stood. Two buildings that shaped one of the most famous skylines in this country, or in the world...... Seven years later and I will never forget. I don't really know what to say except to all those we lost we will never forget and never take for granted the sacrifices that you made.

Welcome! After exhausting some research on what I should name my most recent project, this blog, I uncovered the most perfect name, ARROWMINDEAD. The meaning behind this blog is to survery all the things we love to talk about until they're dead, through the lens of cupid's arrow. The entries will come from Cupid, himself.

Food for thought?

Wondering how people name their blogs is an old question, never answered to my satisfaction. Fortunately the Blogwise directory hosts a list of 33810 blogs. Extracting the names of each blog from the directory itself took some work, but the result is this text file of blog names, one per line. Now that I got the raw data, it’s time to go to work.

The top word, used in 9.986 percent of the blogs surveyed was “blog.” The next most popular, at 2.619 percent, is “life.” Here’s the top 10 words in a blog’s name:
